Many of our XP machines seem to be stuck permanently at 100% of their CPU, even if they are dual or quad core - is there anything that we can do?

Disable all automatic updating now as there is no more to do. This will prevent the automatic update service continually asking if there are any more updates and bringing the system to a halt..
