The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

We are seeing this error on our new VHD download of Server2012. Does anyone have any experience of this?

If you are seeing this error while trying to move a VM then you may be trying to move from a newer Hyper-V host to and older one such as 2012 to 2008 R2
This is not possible as the protocols are not backward compatible.

You must either export and import or replicate and failover to downgrade the Hyper-V host OS of a VM

Each Hyper-V version from 2008 R2 > 2012 R2 > 2016 > 2019 is not backwards compatible when moving VMs, you can only go up and it is a one way trip!
