If iTunes is taking a long time to start on Windows 11, several factors could be causing the slowdown. Here are the main reasons and potential solutions:

1. Background Processes & Startup Impact

  • iTunes runs multiple background processes, including Apple Mobile Device Service and Bonjour.

  • These services can slow down startup, especially if they have issues initializing.

Solution:

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Startup tab → Disable unnecessary Apple services (except those you need).

  • Restart Windows and see if iTunes loads faster.

2. Large iTunes Library

  • If your library has thousands of songs, movies, or podcasts, iTunes may take longer to load.

  • iTunes checks and verifies the library on startup.

Solution:

  • Move or rename the iTunes Library.itl file (located in C:\Users\YourUsername\Music\iTunes) and see if iTunes starts faster with a fresh library.

  • Regularly clean up unnecessary items in the library.

3. Old iTunes Installation or Cache Buildup

  • Over time, old cache files and settings can slow iTunes down.

Solution:

  • Uninstall iTunes completely and reinstall the latest version from Apple's website (not the Microsoft Store version, which is often slower).

  • Delete cache files: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes

4. iTunes Compatibility Issues

  • Windows 11 may have compatibility issues with older iTunes versions.

Solution:

  • Right-click iTunes → PropertiesCompatibility tab → Run in Windows 8 or Windows 10 compatibility mode.

  • Run iTunes as an administrator.

5. Corrupt iTunes Preferences

  • Damaged preferences can cause startup delays.

Solution:

  • Delete the com.apple.itunes.plist file (if it exists) in C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences.

6. Slow Network Connection

  • iTunes attempts to connect to Apple services and sync devices, which can slow it down if your connection is slow.

Solution:

  • Disable internet temporarily and launch iTunes offline to see if it starts faster.

7. Third-Party Security Software Conflicts

  • Some antivirus or firewall programs may interfere with iTunes.

Solution:

  • Temporarily disable your antivirus/firewall and check if iTunes starts faster.

8. Outdated or Conflicting Apple Services

  • Services like Bonjour and Apple Mobile Device Service may not be running properly.

Solution:

  • Open Services (Win + R → type services.msc)

  • Find Apple Mobile Device Service and Bonjour Service, right-click → Restart.

  • If they are set to Disabled, set them to Automatic and restart your PC.

Final Recommendation:

If none of the above fixes work, consider using a lightweight alternative like MusicBee or Foobar2000 for music management and using iTunes only when absolutely necessary.

Let me know if you need step-by-step help with any of these solutions!

I need it to backup and put music on my phone. Windows itself is not slow so I do not believe it is a problem of resource.

Since you primarily use iTunes for backups and music transfers on your phone, and your Windows 11 system isn't slow in general, the issue is likely due to iTunes itself, Apple services, or device synchronization processes. Here are the most relevant fixes to get iTunes to start faster:

1. Disable Automatic Device Syncing

iTunes may be slowing down because it's automatically scanning for connected Apple devices.

🔹 Fix:

  1. Open iTunes (even if it’s slow).

  2. Go to Edit > Preferences.

  3. Click the Devices tab.

  4. Check the box "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically".

  5. Click OK, restart iTunes, and see if it opens faster.

2. Manually Restart Apple Services

If Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) or Bonjour Service is misbehaving, iTunes may hang on startup.

🔹 Fix:

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.

  2. Scroll down and find:

    • Apple Mobile Device Service

    • Bonjour Service

  3. Right-click each service, choose Restart.

  4. Set both to Automatic if they are not.

  5. Restart iTunes and check if it loads faster.

3. Remove Old iTunes Library Files (if it lags on library load)

If iTunes is slow after an update or when loading your music library, the iTunes Library.itl file may be corrupted.

🔹 Fix:

  1. Close iTunes.

  2. Navigate to: C:\Users\YourUsername\Music\iTunes\

  3. Rename iTunes Library.itl to iTunes Library.old

  4. Restart iTunes (it will create a new library file).

  5. If it loads fast, re-import your music manually.

4. Reinstall iTunes (Use the Standalone Version, Not Microsoft Store)

The Microsoft Store version of iTunes tends to be slower than the standalone version.

🔹 Fix:

  1. Uninstall iTunes Completely:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

    • Search for iTunes, Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support, and uninstall all Apple software.

  2. Download iTunes directly from Apple (here).

  3. Install and restart your PC.

5. Launch iTunes Without Network Access

Since iTunes checks Apple’s servers on launch, a slow connection or an Apple server issue can delay startup.

🔹 Fix:

  1. Disconnect from the internet (disable Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet).

  2. Open iTunes offline.

  3. If it loads quickly, the issue is with network access. In that case:

    • Disable Apple Music and iTunes Store access:

      • Go to Edit > Preferences > Store tab

      • Uncheck "Show Apple Music" and "Sync Library"

    • Restart iTunes.

6. Check for Conflicting Security Software

Some antivirus programs interfere with iTunes, especially if they scan Bonjour or Apple services.

🔹 Fix:

  • Temporarily disable your antivirus and open iTunes.

  • If it loads faster, add iTunes and Bonjour as exceptions in your antivirus settings.

7. Manually Add Music to Your iPhone (Instead of Syncing)

If iTunes slows down when syncing, you can drag-and-drop music manually instead of using auto-sync.

🔹 Fix:

  1. Connect your iPhone.

  2. In iTunes, disable automatic syncing:

    • Go to Edit > Preferences > Devices.

    • Check "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically".

  3. Manually drag music to your iPhone in the iTunes window.

8. Try iTunes in Compatibility Mode

Some users report iTunes runs better in compatibility mode.

🔹 Fix:

  1. Right-click the iTunes shortcut.

  2. Select Properties > Compatibility tab.

  3. Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select Windows 8.

  4. Click OK, then restart iTunes.

🔥 Best Fix If You’re In a Hurry:

  1. Disable auto-sync (Fix #1)

  2. Restart Apple Services (Fix #2)

  3. Download standalone iTunes (Fix #4)

One of these should speed up your iTunes startup time. Let me know if you need more help! 🚀

What do you mean by Download standalone iTunes ?

By "Download standalone iTunes," I mean getting the traditional version of iTunes directly from Apple's website instead of using the Microsoft Store version.

Why?

  • The Microsoft Store version of iTunes is often slower, more buggy, and can have service conflicts with Apple’s background processes.

  • The standalone installer gives you more control over installation and services.

How to Download the Standalone iTunes Version

  1. Uninstall the Microsoft Store Version (If Installed)

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.

    • Search for iTunes and uninstall it.

    • Also uninstall Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update if they are installed.

  2. Download iTunes Directly from Apple (Not the Microsoft Store)

  3. Install iTunes Using the Standalone Installer

    • Run the downloaded .exe file.

    • Follow the on-screen instructions.

    • Restart your computer after installation.

  4. Launch iTunes & Check Speed

    • Open iTunes and see if it starts faster.

Bonus Step: Block Auto-Updates

If iTunes was slowing down due to forced updates, you can disable Apple Software Update:

  • Search for "Apple Software Update" in the Start menu.

  • Open it, go to Edit > Preferences, and disable automatic updates.

Expected Improvement:

  • Faster startup times

  • Fewer conflicts with background services

  • More stable syncing and backups

Let me know if this helps! 🚀

Oh I see. No I'm not using the app version - I find everything on the Microsoft store to be slow and buggy but that's Microsoft's on-premise software in general outside of X-box where they have proper competition.

That makes total sense! The Microsoft Store versions of most apps, including iTunes, tend to be bloated, slow, and problematic—especially when it comes to handling background services properly. It’s frustrating how Microsoft’s on-premise software outside of Xbox feels neglected, whereas competition forces them to keep their gaming ecosystem in check.

Since you're already using the standalone iTunes version, the next best steps to speed it up would be:

  1. Disabling automatic syncing (if you haven't already).

  2. Restarting Apple services manually when needed.

  3. Clearing old library files if iTunes lags on startup.

If it still drags, checking for conflicts with antivirus software or Bonjour Service lagging behind might help. Let me know if you want to dig deeper!
