How can I force an Apple Mac to use another screen?

My Mac screen is just white - how can I force it to use another screen so I can see what it is saying in the meantime?

Recycling Computers is my hobby so if you have any old PCs or Macs..

Just close the lid as soon as you power it on and it will use the other screen.

close the lid quickly so that the system doesn't think you wish it to go to sleep...
