It can be incredibly frustrating when your iPhone suddenly goes "ghost" on your PC, especially when you just want to grab a few photos. This usually happens because the communication bridge (the driver) between Windows and iOS has crumbled or the "Trust" relationship has expired.
Here is a sequence of fixes to get your iPhone back into Windows Explorer.
1. The "Camera Wake-up" Trick
Sometimes Windows Explorer only looks for "Imaging Devices." If your iPhone has no photos or the camera isn't "active," it might not show up.
- Take a screenshot or a quick photo on your iPhone while it's plugged in.
- This often triggers Windows to recognize the device as a digital camera and pop it into the Explorer sidebar immediately.
2. Reset "Trust" Settings
If you accidentally tapped "Don't Trust" or the certificate expired, Windows won't see the file system.
- Unplug your iPhone.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Select Reset Location & Privacy.
- Plug the iPhone back in and look for the "Trust This Computer?" prompt on your phone screen. Tap Trust and enter your passcode.
3. Kickstart the Apple Driver
The most common technical culprit is a stalled driver. You can manually refresh it via the Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices. You should see "Apple iPhone."
- Right-click Apple iPhone and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Note: If it's not under Portable Devices, check under Universal Serial Bus controllers for "Apple Mobile Device USB Device." If you see a yellow exclamation mark, right-click and select Uninstall device, then unplug and replug your phone to force Windows to reinstall it.
4. Check the "AutoPlay" Settings
Windows might be recognizing the phone but not opening the folder by default.
- Open Settings on your PC.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay.
- Find Apple iPhone in the list and ensure it is set to "Open device to view files (File Explorer)".
Hardware Check
If none of the above worked, we have to look at the physical connection:
- The Cable: Are you using an official Apple or MFi-certified cable? "Charging-only" cables are common and will never show the phone in Explorer because they lack data pins.
- The Port: Try a USB port directly on the back of the motherboard (if using a desktop) rather than a front-case port or a USB hub, which can sometimes lack the power to mount a data drive.
