I am seeing something rather confusing on an old Windows 2003 Box:

Unable to complete the operation on "System." The interface is unknown

Does anyone know what this is or how to solve it?

There's a good chance that this is because the 'Event Log' service has been stopped or disabled, check it in services.msc

If it has been deleted (the service) then you may have to recreate it.
