RAC0690: The iDRAC Service Module is not installed on the operating system of the server. Install the service Module and retry the operation. Is the above message why we cannot gain remote control of the server OS or do we need another type of iDRAC license? it says 'Express' at the top of our iDRAC 8 on a Dell R730xd

You need to install the iDrac software on Windows to enable the function you are attempting. This is very simple and just requires you to download the relevant version of the iDRAC software from Dell For the smaller Dell PowerEdge server series, the downloads are as follows: v1.0 Download for 2008 R2 server is here v1.66 Download for Dell iDRAC 7 is here v2.63 for Windows 2012 R2 or 2016 is here You can see a list of all iDRAC server software here You then need to install the relevant software for you server and iDRAC unit using an account with administrator privileges.

Does it matter if we install the iDRAC service module in Windows itself? Surely the device is mostly used when Windows is non-functional...?

It does help to have the right drivers for Windows in terms of machine operation, after all Windows is the OS you use rather than the iDRAC OS, and some of the monitoring systems are updated by Windows for the logs available in iDRAC. So yes, it is best to have the software installed and up-to-date.
